This project will give girls aged 8-16 in Coventry a safe, supportive introduction to hockey. For many, this’ll be their first positive experience of organised sport and physical activity. Weekly girls-only sessions will remove key barriers identified in our consultations, including cost, discomfort in mixed-gender sport settings, and a lack of female coaches.
The sessions will be designed to encourage befriending through partner activities and shared hockey challenges. The awards evening will reinforce girls’ sense-of-belonging in sport by celebrating their hockey skills/techniques, thus embedding a legacy that girls do belong in sport.
Pathway to a team – longer term, we’ll establish a dedicated girls’ development team in 2026 to compete in the Midlands Development League, giving participants a clear pathway to continue playing hockey competitively or recreationally.
